Should you buy Baby Merlin Magic Sleepsuit?

If you hate reading long detailed baby merlin magic sleepsuit reviews and are just looking to know whether you should buy it or not then here is the answer, in short.

The thing I love most about the Baby Merlin Magic Sleepsuit is that it is the perfect transition product between swaddling and sleeping unswaddled.

I would definitely recommend it for that phase when they keep breaking out of the swaddle but the startle reflex (Moro reflex) is still there.

The Magic Sleepsuit comes in cotton and microfleece versions  – I bought the cotton one for my son and then the microfleece one for my daughter and I am completely satisfied with the products.

It did not overheat my kids which is a concern for many parents. Neither did it have any impact on their developmental skills.

Will it make babies sleep through the night? That depends on a combination of many factors as I mention below.

My kids did require some combination of sleep training even with the sleepsuit, hence I would not recommend it solely for making babies sleep through the night.

Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit In-depth Review

Here’s everything you need to know about our experience with the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit.

In this magic merlin sleepsuit review, I discuss the pros and cons, magic sleepsuit negative reviews, as well as information about the sleepsuit including what age should it be used and when to stop using it.

Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit is a swaddle transition product.

Babies love to be swaddled as it gives them a feeling of security, this is normal for most infants.

They have a strong startle / Moro reflex from birth till 3 to 4 months. You will notice this as flailing arms especially while sleeping.

When unswaddled, the Moro reflex can cause babies to wake and their sleep gets disturbed.

Swaddling gives babies a womb-like feeling and restricts the movement of arms and legs thus calming infants and making them sleep better.

Read over 3000 reviews for the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit now.

However, some babies start getting out of swaddle blankets before the reflex is really gone.

Both my kids did this quite early at around 1 month – or maybe we were really bad at swaddling them!

Anyway, they kept taking arms out of the swaddle, and hence I started using the Summer Infant Swaddle Me initially. This is a velcro swaddle and works perfectly – it is very difficult to get out of the swaddle.

However, then both our kids started rolling onto their tummies quite early around the 3.5 months mark but could not rollback.

This is very scary as their noses can get trapped and causes anxiety for many parents.

I did try getting my kids to sleep without swaddling but they wouldn’t have any of it.

So I started searching for something that would help them transition out of the swaddle but still be safe to sleep in. The answer: Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit!

What is the Magic Sleepsuit? How does it work?

As I mentioned above, the Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit is a swaddle transition product that replaces swaddling.

It is like a sleep sack or wearable blanket but it has arms and leg holes.

It is also lots thicker compared to sleep sacks and gives the feeling of being swaddled to babies.

It is weighted and doesn’t easily allow babies to roll over.

When we started using the sleepsuit instead of the swaddle, both our kids loved it.

They could move their arms and legs and did not have to ‘fight’ the swaddle but the sleepsuit was still cozy enough to calm the startle reflex and give a good night’s sleep.

More ever, they could not roll over in the weighted sleepsuit and slept soundly on their back. According to most magic sleepsuit reviews, several parents have experienced this.

Can it overheat the baby?

The magic sleepsuit is weighted plus quite thick. One of the common complaints is that it overheats babies.

We did not experience this with both our kids.

I was always more cautious with my son since he is always feeling hot and sweats buckets. For him, I dressed him in a thin cotton onesie, kept the temperature cool, and checked frequently for the first few days.

I always monitored at night over our Infant Optics Video Baby Monitor and ensured that he is sleeping comfortably.

We have read some instances of overheating and I would always recommend monitoring carefully at regular intervals in initial days.

Can the magic sleepsuit be used for naps?

Yes, the magic sleepsuit can also be used for naps. In fact, the product website suggests trying it for naps first.

We could not do this since we urgently needed to stop our daughter from rolling over at night.

How easy is it to change diapers with the sleepsuit?

The way the sleepsuit is constructed, it has two zipper tabs in the front which go all the way down to the waist.

After unzipping both, I can remove my baby girl from the sleepsuit in under 15 seconds and quickly change her diaper if needed.

However, we almost never needed to change diapers at night since I size up for night diapers and add the Sposie Diaper Liner to keep her dry.

How much does the sleepsuit cost?

The Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit in yellow color and small size cost me less than a family meal when I purchased it via Amazon.

Click here to check the current price of the magic sleepsuit.

What sizes does the sleepsuit come in? At what age should you buy one?

The sleepsuit comes in two sizes: 3-6 months and 6-9 months.

The 3-6 months is for babies between 12 to 18 pounds while the 9-12 months size is for babies between 18 to 21 pounds.

I recommend buying the 3-6 months size when your baby first starts getting out of swaddles.

I bought the 6-9 months size for my daughter instead of the smaller size because she was already 4 months old, however, the smaller size would have fitted more snugly and been more comfortable.

Ideally, the sleepsuit has to be quite snug to perform its function well. If I had to buy it again, I would buy a smaller size.

What colors does the magic sleepsuit come in?

The sleepsuit comes in really nice pastel colors.

The cotton sleepsuit comes in 4 colors: a light baby blue, cream, baby pink, and yellow.

The microfleece version comes in 3 colors: light blue, baby pink, and a nice gender-neutral yellow.

The cotton cream version is the only color I’m not a fan of, the rest all are great choices. Check out the colors in cotton now.

Should you buy the Merlin’s Magic sleepsuit in microfleece or cotton?

As per the product website, the microfleece and cotton sleepsuits are structurally the same.

They have the same inner lining and fill. They are equally thick and about equally weighted.

They provide an equal amount of warmth to the baby and equally dissipate heat.

Only the outer fabric is microfleece for one and cotton for the other, which according to the product website, seems to be just a cosmetic difference.

That said, some use the cotton magic merlin sleepsuit in summer and microfleece in winter.

Do you need to buy more than one sleepsuit?

I recommend buying just one sleepsuit, to begin with.

It is not worth buying more than one before you know if it works for you.

We could easily manage with just one. It did get dirty with all the frequent night feedings and occasional diaper accidents but I washed it immediately and it was ready for the night.

How to wash the baby magic sleepsuit?

Both the microfleece and cotton versions of the sleepsuit can be washed in a machine.

I machine washed my cotton one in cold water/delicates cycle and then as per the instructions laid out to air dry.

As per the product website, the cotton one should be air dried while the microfleece can be sun-dried.

However, the sleepsuit does take a lot of time to dry.

I have occasionally put it in the dryer on a gentle cycle and it dried quite well. There was no damage to the shape or the fill, nor any other adverse effects.

Will it make a baby sleep through the night?

Ah, the million-dollar question.

When I bought the baby magic sleepsuit, I was in awe of reviews which mentioned ‘love this sleepsuit. My son / daughter slept for 8 hrs straight and woke up in the morning.’

Of course, I hoped for the same miracle. But no such luck!

Both my kids were up at their regular schedule and demanded to be fed. I believe that they were just hungry and needed it!

So if you are looking for something that makes a baby sleep – the sleepsuit can be a hit or a miss!

If the startle reflex is the only thing waking up your baby then the sleepsuit might be the miracle you are looking for.

However if your baby wakes up because it is hungry or because of negative sleep associations, then the sleepsuit won’t make it sleep longer.

For healthy sleep habits, I recommend the book On becoming Babywise

It’s the gold star for getting kids to sleep well and parents have had success getting 2-month-old babies to sleep through the night.

I followed the book advice at about 3 months and had both our kids sleeping through the night at 5.5 months of age – just about the time they transitioned out of the sleepsuit.

Overall, I think the word Magic is used in the product name to play on the hopes of sleep-deprived parents and actual personal experiences can vary quite a bit.

Is the magic sleepsuit useful for forming healthy sleep habits?

While the sleepsuit wasn’t enough for making my daughter sleep through the night, it did play a role in making her sleep on her own.

I had formed the habit of laying her down drowsy but awake and she used to fall asleep on her own but only if swaddled. She needed her movement restricted so she could fall asleep.

When we transitioned to the sleepsuit, she had lots more freedom but she started associating the sleepsuit with ‘its sleep time’ and started falling asleep as soon as she was in the suit.

The main difference between swaddles and the magic sleepsuit is that baby’s hands are free for it to self soothe and learn to sleep on their own.

Babies who use pacifiers or binkies or loveys are free to touch, play, or reach them unlike when swaddled.

They can move their heads comfortably as well as legs. This allows the babies to fall asleep as they naturally would while at the same time providing a secure environment.

Is the Merlin’s Magic Baby Sleepsuit good for traveling with a baby?

Well as a traveling family who keeps moving all over the country, you knew I had to discuss this!

As it happens, the Magic sleepsuit is an essential part of our travel gear.

The sleepsuit does take up space, what I ended up doing was rolling it and packing it in a large packing cube – we have the Travelwise packing cubes

That saved up a lot of space and the sleepsuit fluffed back up immediately when I unpacked it.

The baby sleepsuit was quite useful when we traveled. We visited New Orleans and San Antonio during that time frame and I packed the sleepsuit for both trips.

The hotel room and hotel crib was new to our daughter but bundled up in the cozy sleepsuit, she fell asleep on her own even in the new environment.

Is the sleepsuit good for sleep training?

The magic sleepsuit is really a helpful product for sleep training your baby.

Though, again, if you are looking to sleep train and form healthy sleeping habits, I would recommend the Babywise book far more than the sleepsuit.

Here’s why I love the Babywise book: It taught me to create a dependable sleep routine for both my kids.

Ours is: wear a night diaper and pajamas, then the last feeding of the day in our nursery rocking chair, then pack our daughter in her SwaddleMe / Merlin sleepsuit while still awake, place her in the crib, read Goodnight Moon baby book, sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, kiss her good night, and then turn off the light.

That’s it – she sleeps on her own after that without any crying.

The routine is small enough to be completed in 5-6 minutes and simple enough that I can do it anywhere – I just need to pack her sleepsuit and the Goodnight Moon book if we are traveling.

The Babywise book taught me to layer sleeping cues by creating a routine so that by the last cue, she knows it is time for her to sleep and starts yawning. And let me tell you, it works!

Can the Merlin’s Sleepsuit be used to sleep on tummy?

The answer is a big, big no. The sleepsuit is designed only for sleeping on the back.

The sleepsuit restricts babies’ movement and so you should never, ever place a baby on its tummy in the sleepsuit.

If a baby who previously slept well in the sleepsuit, suddenly starts rolling over then it is time to say goodbye to the sleepsuit.

Transitioning out of Merlin’s sleepsuit

When to stop using merlin’s magic sleepsuit? Well, using merlin sleepsuit and rolling over is the key!

We used the sleepsuit for a solid 45 days before our daughter started to roll over in it.

The first few days she could roll over only on her left side, so instead of keeping her in the crib center, I kept her near the edge so that there was no place to roll over to her left.

That worked for about two days, and then she started rolling onto her left side too.

So off came the sleepsuit!

But her startle reflex was completely gone and she took to sleeping without the sleepsuit like a duck to water.

At 5 months of age, she sleeps unswaddled, rolls onto her tummy which has become her favorite sleeping position, and goes to sleep.

She can roll back as well and so it is completely safe. We did not have any issues with the transition.

Are there any cheaper alternatives to Merlin’s Sleepsuit?

As I mentioned before, Merlin’s sleepsuit costs equivalent to a full family’s meal. That is quite a significant amount.

There are other similar products which cost quite less however they do not have similar awesome reviews as the magic merlin sleepsuit reviews.

While most of these products are also advertised as miracle sleepsuits that help babies sleep better, most of them are just some forms of wearable blankets for bigger kids including toddlers.

The Swaddle UP performs the same function as the sleepsuit but it does not have the separate legs feature which can be a deal-breaker.

There are only 3 notable exceptions.

One is this sleepsuit by CribCulture but it cost about the same as Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit. Besides, it did not have as many fantastic reviews as the magic sleepsuit

The second is the JK Unicorn sleepsuit while the third was the Royal Baby Sleepsuit. Both are quite cheap but lack reliable reviews – if you buy them, it is at your own risk.

That’s why I recommend purchasing the tried and tested Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit, it is definitely worth its price.

While we were able to use the sleepsuit only for 45 days, it was worth every penny spent.

I had complete peace of mind in that critical phase when she could roll onto her tummy but then ‘got stuck’.

Also, how much mileage you can get with the sleepsuit varies from baby to baby.

Some babies roll over when they are 8 months old and can use the sleepsuit for much longer.

Not to mention, the Merlin’s Baby Magic Sleepsuit is one of the most wanted baby products and you can easily sell it for a good price on Craigslist or over FB Marketplace.

Overall the sleepsuit is a quality product. When brand new, it smells clean and fresh – no weird chemical smells.

The zippers are of excellent quality and never get stuck. There are covers over the zipper so that they don’t scratch the baby.

I would definitely recommend it enough to put in on your Baby Registry.

In this section, we cover the essentials for packing for California. You will need to pack according to the list for exploring California’s cities. For exploring California’s cites

Use this as your starting list. If you are spending any time in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, Palm Springs, or any other cities then you need this list. You can follow this list for each family member and customize it as per your preferences.

4-5 Tees, Shirts and Blouses

Carry a bunch of tees, shirts, and blouses so that you do not have to repeat your clothes and worry about washing them when they get spoiled. One or two extra tops and tees should carry you well over several days.

2 pairs of jeans

2 pairs of jeans should be enough for a trip of up to 3 to 4 days without any problem as these can be easily re-worn. If you are planning for a longer trip, add an extra pair. Make sure that the denim is comfortable.

2 pairs of shorts & skirts

Adding a pair of shorts and skirts adds versatility to your outfits. It will ensure that you have enough casual wear for relaxed outings during your trip to California. Choose bright colors or bold prints to add a statement of style.

1-2 Dressy outfit for date nights & clubbing

Packing a couple of dressy outfits is key to having a travel wardrobe for all occasions. Enjoy Los Angeles and San Francisco nightclubs and go on date nights to trendy restaurants with your partners by dressing up to the nines during your trip.

1-2 Maxi dresses or sundresses

Maxi or sundresses are especially essential if you are headed to SoCal. They can double up as casual/stylish outfits and can be worn for visiting museums during the day to having a beach view patio dinner at night.

1 utility jacket or trench coat if traveling fall to spring

Utility jacket or a trench coat – if it’s waterproof, even better – will make sure that you are ready for whatever weather that California chooses to dish up during your trip. This is especially necessary if you are road tripping along the Pacific Coast as the weather changes quite often as you drive northwards. Read our post on the Most stylish and trendy travel jackets for women to see our recommended picks.

Pajamas or loungewear

There’s nothing like slipping into your favorite pair of pajamas or nightwear after a long day of shopping, exploring cities, hiking, or swimming on the beach. Chill out in comfortable pajamas and rest for the next day’s activities.

Underwear & socks

Goes without saying, carry plenty of comfortable underwear and socks for your California trip to avoid a trip to the laundry as having a clean pair is indeed essential for everyone.

Comfortable flats or walking shoes

Expect to walk a lot while exploring the cities and walking in museums or zoos. From spending an entire day shopping to walking along the beach, comfortable flats or walking shoes will prove very useful.

Dress shoes

Pack in a pair of fancy shoes that go with your dress for when you plan to go clubbing, visit dive bars, go on brunches, or dine in the uber-trendy restaurants in California.

Sun Hat or cap

The California sun gets super hot, especially in the south. Having a hat will be useful while you go out during the day whether for long walks or to the beaches or shopping. It will definitely save you from getting skin burns and tans.

Sunscreen

Definitely carry sunscreen on your California trip irrespective of when you go. A little tan is good but getting sunburned is painful, trust me – I have learned it the wrong way!

Toothpaste & Toothbrush

Toothbrush and toothpaste are legit one of the most forgotten travel items! Make sure to carry yours in your toiletries. Btw, did you know – if you forget toothpaste most hotels can supply you with one?! Just call up the housekeeping/reception desk and let them know.

Makeup

Super essential for a trip to California. Whether you plan to take pics for the gram while you go clubbing or flaunt that beach bod in Malibu, you definitely need some makeup to look your best self. Make sure that you carry your makeup essentials including waterproof eye makeup with you all the time.

Glasses / contacts & sunglasses

Glasses & contacts are essential for those like me who wear prescription glasses. Don’t forget to carry an extra pair because having a blurry trip is no fun! Also, don’t forget to carry a good pair of sunglasses for both, as a fashion statement, and to shield your eyes from the hot California sun.

Documents for California packing list

Always carry along the required travel documents for a hassle-free and stress-free trip. Here is what all you might need to pack for California.

Passport / ID / Driver’s License

Get an RFID blocking antitheft wallet to keep your essential documents including passport and other IDs safe at all times. Also, don’t forget to pack them as you may be denied entry on planes or in clubs. A driver’s license will be necessary to rent cars and go on a road trip to California. The documents will also be needed for booking attraction travel tickets, hotels, and availing other services.

Travel Insurance documents

Nobody can predict what mishap might befall while traveling; the latest pandemic is a great example. You might end up losing your documents or the airlines might lose your luggage but good travel insurance will come to your rescue in such trying times.

Credit Card

A credit card is a very convenient mode of payment plus helps you rack up miles or rewards points. It also essential for the shopaholic in you!

Money

Most of the transactions can be done digitally today but there is always that one place which is cash only. If you are traveling to the US internationally, make sure to carry a sufficient amount of cash in dollars for your shopping sprees and other needs.

Technology essentials for your California trip

Nowadays tech essentials are as much a part of essential travel gear as clothes and footwear. Here’s what all you need

Powerbanks

Nowadays, I don’t travel anywhere without a power bank to charge my cell phone, tablet, and smartwatch. The gadgets are like a modern extension of my body and I definitely don’t want them to run out of juice.

Phones and chargers

Several times have I kept my phone out on the desk or for charging to the last minute and then had to run back to get it! While we know that you will *almost* never forget your smartphone and chargers, it is important to double-check before you head out as these items are not easily replaceable.

Cameras and chargers

A California trip is full of epic and memorable moments. You definitely want to retain the memories and a camera plus the charger are essential to treasure the moments forever.

Tripod / Selfie stick

We always carry along some sort of handsfree camera support to click family photos of all of us together on vacation. Whether you prefer tripods or selfie sticks, they are very useful – especially when you’re traveling solo – to take amazing photos for the ‘gram and photo albums.

Kindle Fire/e-reader or tablet

If you enjoy reading, then definitely carry along a kindle, tablet or any e-reader. The tablets are also a blessing when our kids are cranky and need something to cheer them up. I love to load my tablet with books and take some time to read when I find a beautiful and quiet reading spot.

For a trip to the southern California beaches

Add these items if you will be spending significant time on the California beaches and engaging in any kind of water sports. Also read our post on Southern California road trip itinerary.

Swimsuit & coverups

We’re pretty sure that you plan to take a dip in the beautiful Southern California Beaches, so don’t forget your swimsuit and coverups. Splurge on something trendy, stylish, yet comfortable for your trip.

Beach towel

Carry a long beach towel or two, whether you plan to go swimming, sunbathe on the beach, or just relax in the sand. You’ll definitely not regret carrying a beach towel for everyone in your party.

Tote

Pack a foldable tote to use as a beach bag to carry your sunscreen, beach towel, books, headphones, tablets, etc to the beach. Totes are easy to carry and spacious enough to carry all the essentials.

Water shoes or flip flops

When you visit the beaches, wear a pair of flip flops or water shoes to keep your feet safe from the trash, weeds, or marine life that may get washed up. Ditch the flip flops for waterproof hiking sandals if you plan to look for tidepool creatures over rough and rocky coast.

Drybag

While you go for a dip on the beach or try water sports, make sure to carry a dry bag to protect all your accessories and other important items from getting wet.

For spending a day at the theme parks

California is famous for its theme parks. Anaheim has many including Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Legoland, and many more. Here’s what you need to survive a day at the theme parks

Disney Daily Agenda Planner

While it is easy to get lost in the magical world of Disney, make sure to carry a Disney Daily Agenda Planner so that you don’t miss out on things that you have been wanting to visit all along.

Disney drawstring backpack

The best way to carry a camera, water bottle, sunscreen, etc at Disney is in a matching Disney drawstring backpack. These themed bags are especially hit with kids on their first Disney trip, no matter the age or gender.

Poncho

The climate of California can change in a jiffy with cold showers coming in from out of nowhere on a sunny warm day. Carry a Poncho along with you to avoid getting wet.

Handheld USB Fans & Mist sprayers

A day at Disney can be hot and humid at times, so we recommend carrying a handheld USB fan or a mist sprayer to keep cool during the long walks from attraction to attraction at the theme park.

Disney autograph book

Don’t forget to carry a Disney Autograph book for all kids at all times – you never know when you might run into Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, or your favorite Disney Princesses at the park.

For biking the Golden Gate Bridge

Biking is one of the best ways to explore the Golden Gate Bridge. You can also bike at many other places in California including Napa Valley, in the city of San Francisco, along the beaches, and in the national parks.

1 Padded riding shorts

If you plan to bike the Golden Gate Bridge or Napa Valley, a padded riding short will make your ride much more comfortable and enjoyable.

1 sport jerseys

A sports jersey that you can wear or remove as needed will keep you protected against climate changes and cool winds plus keep you looking trendy and fashionable.

Fanny pack or backpack

A fanny pack or backpack will help you carry your essentials like water bottle, documents, cell phone, power bank, etc while you bike through the Golden State.

For hiking in the Californian deserts

California deserts are a different environment. They are different than the beaches and you need to be uniquely prepared to hike in the harsh climate. Pack these things and you will have a great time hiking in the desert whether you are visiting Joshua Tree or Death Valley

1 hiking pants

A pair of comfortable and well-fitting hiking pants will ensure that you are comfortable while hiking through the desert. Some also prefer hiking shorts but the long pant is a good idea to combat the desert heat and walk through the cacti environment.

1-2 Moisture-wicking shirt

Pack a few moisture-wicking shirts made of 100% polyester for backpacking across the California desert. The shirts are good at keeping the humidity and sweat away from your skin and keep you dry. Pack a combination of long-sleeved and short-sleeved shirts.

1 Sweatshirt or jacket

While the days are hot, nights can get pretty cool out in the open. A sweatshirt or jacket will help you sheath from cool desert winds and keep you from shivering at nighttime.

Sports underwear

A pair of athletic underwear you snug and comfortable while providing extra support while you indulge in desert adventures such as ATV riding, rock scrambling, and other outdoor activities.

Hiking Backpack / Daypack

We love carrying a packable daypack to keep all essentials while hiking in the desert. The backpacks come with many handy pockets and water bottle compartments and are the perfect hiking gear.

Hiking boots & socks or hiking sandals

While joggers and sneakers are good for exploring cities, they can’t substitute for hiking boots/ sandals while walking over tough terrain. Also, pack a pair of moisture-wicking hiking socks to avoid blisters.

Cooling Towels

If you don’t like getting hot, then a cooling towel is the best invention ever! Simply soak the towel in some water, wring it, and keep it over your neck. Or use it to wipe your face. You will instantly feel refreshed.

Water Bottle

It is very important to carry a water bottle while hiking in the desert. Carrying a bottle of ice water is essential for everyone especially when you are hiking during the summer.

For camping in California’s mountains

If you plan to visit California national parks, then plan to camp. Camping lets you be close to national park attractions and explore the nature more intimately. Here is what you need to go camping.

Tent & stakes

Nothing beats camping in the mountains under the open sky with millions of stars keeping you company. If you are an adventurer wanting to go camping in Yosemite or Sequoia, tent & stakes need to be the first item on your list.

Mallet for hammering stakes

A mallet is essential to hammer the stakes deep in the ground. Mallets also have a tent peg remover which is useful while packing up and can be used as a multi-tool for self-defense or while rock-climbing.

Sleeping pads & sleeping bags

While camping is thrilling and fun-filled, being ill-equipped can do you more harm than good. A good cold weather sleeping pad & bag should enable you to be comfortable even on cold nights in the mountains.

Flashlights

Unless your site has an electric hookup, a flashlight is your go-to source of electricity for visiting restrooms at night or keeping an eye out for the wildlife.

Camping chairs

Keep a couple of camping chairs in the car to be comfortable when star-gazing at night or enjoying a campfire and roasting marshmallows.

Camping lantern

Carry a portable camping lantern to help you stay safe in the dark. Many often double up as bug repellants are useful to keep the swarm of mosquitoes away.

Camping stove & fuel

As long as you are planning to cook your own camping meals and not survive just on cold cuts, then you absolutely need to pack a camping stove & fuel. And you never know, when you might have night cravings for instant noodles or mac n cheese or hot water in the middle of a cold night!

Camping utensils – Cooking & dining

Carry a set of basic cooking & dining utensils like a skillet, dutch ovens, plates, tumblers, flatware, grill, & tongs to prepare your meal out in the open.

Cooler

A cooler will keep your beer cold and the food frozen. This is a camping essential to keep your perishables safe and increase their shelf life.

Trash bag

For skiing near Lake Tahoe

Ski pants & jackets

A set of ski pants & jackets is made from functional fabric that keeps you warm and dry while you go skiing at Lake Tahoe.

Thermal underwear

Layer thermal underwear under your clothes and ski pants to avoid freezing to death. No matter how tolerant you are to winter and snow, thermal underwear is the best way to stay warm while playing in the snow.

Ski socks

A pair of ski socks are specifically designed to keep you warm and dry as you go skiing. They fit properly inside the ski boots and are longer than normal socks. The wrong ski socks will leave your feet wet, cold, and sore feet thereby ruining the fun of skiing.

Winter hats/beanies

Pack a cozy winter hat or beanie to stay outdoors in the freezing weather and enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, or playing in the snow.

Waterproof gloves

A pair of waterproof ski gloves will keep your hands toasty warm and have enough grip to grasp the skis well. They have enough dexterity for winter activities such as snowmobiling, snowboarding, and ice climbing.

For road tripping in the redwood forests

One of the best ways to explore California is to go on road trips. You can take a road trip along the coast and through the giant redwood trees along the Northern Cali coast. We suggest packing road trip essentials to make your time on the road more enjoyable. Pack these items and you will thank us for it later.

Car Insurance Policy

Not only is having a car insurance policy essential from a legal perspective but having a good policy might save you money and come to your aid in case of a roadside emergency.

GPS or road maps

There is little to zero cell phone range at many natural attractions in California. And that’s why we always recommend carrying a separate GPS while hiking through dense woods or going off-roading. You definitely don’t want to get lost in the unknown terrain. If you prefer the old route, then carry road maps for the trip.

Roadside Emergency Kit

While going on any road trip, it is important to carry a well-equipped roadside emergency kit. You can modify the kit according to your needs but have a few essentials including a rope, coolant, motor oil, first aid kit, blanket, snacks, etc as a must.

Road trip games

For families and those traveling with kids, carry along a bunch of road trip games to while away the hours. While the list of road trip games is endless, some of our favorites include I Spy, Scavenger Hunt, etc.

USB drive with songs

A killer soundtrack can break the monotonousness of driving and alleviate any road trip. Open roads, clean air, beautiful scenery, and your favorite songs are all that you need to have a memorable California road trip. We love digital downloads and make a mix or playlist of our favorites on a USB drive that is compatible with most of the cars.

Packing essentials and luggage for your California trip

Carry on size bags, personal items, anti-theft backpacks, and packing cubes. These items are essential to organizing your stuff and carrying a compact bag. Here is our recommendation for favorite travel gear.

Packing Cubes

We are huge packing cube fans. It is the single most important gear that keeps our clothes and travel accessories organized as well as easily accessible. Packing cubes allows us to pack for all 4 of us in a single bag and is an important packing essential.

Crossbody bag

Keep all of your essentials including hand sanitizers, travel documents, wipes, chargers, water bottles, etc handy and easily accessible by carrying a crossbody bag on your trip.

Anti-theft backpack

We love anti-theft backpacks to keep all our belongings safe. These come with many hidden pockets and compartments plus have safety features such as steel mesh for anti-cut features and lockable zips., Anti-theft backpack keep your important items including passports, tickets, other travel documents, gadgets, wallets, cash, cards, etc. safe

RFID Wallet

While the threat of data skimming and identity theft is more imminent than ever, carrying an RFID blocking wallet will make sure that your digital data and cards are safe during your trip.

Cosmetics / Makeup / Toiletry Bag

Keep all essentials including cosmetics, eye and face makeup, and toiletries together in a separate bag. The small pouches are perfect for travel-sized items and makeup jars and brushes.

What to pack for California with kids

Traveling with kids is a different ball game altogether. If you have got kids – whether babies or teens – you need to pack a few items to keep them occupied in flights, on the road, and while exploring the city and national parks. Here is what you should pack for a California trip with the kids.

Beach toys

We love to carry some beach toys for the kids including sand buckets, rakes, shovels, beach balls, etc so that they can play on the sand to their heart’s content. We also love getting in the sand to build sandcastles with them.

Kids camera

We love giving our kid’s separate camera as it helps them learn about photography and take their own pictures of attractions. It works as well as any other travel toy to keep them distracted when needed.

Hiking carrier

California is a hiker’s paradise and everyone visiting the state should go on at least one hike to experience the state’s stunning landscapes. For those traveling with a baby or toddler, carry a hiking carrier to enjoy the outdoors with your kids.

Wipes & Diapers

If your kids are still not potty-trained, carry enough wipes and diapers to last through the trip. And, this is important – remember to change them more frequently than you would at home. Nothing like a diaper blowout to spoil your trip and mess with your planning!

Travel toys

We always recommend carrying lightweight, safe, portable travel toys for your kids. It will keep them entertained during long flights and in wait lines for attractions. Having a variety of travel toys allows us to enjoy the trip as much as the kids.

That’s it. We hope you like our list of what to pack for California for all types of trips. Did we miss out on an essential item? Let us know in the comments.

So, let’s find out the best drone with a camera under $300!

Drones 101

In case you are new to drones, here is a quick introduction. A drone is a remote-controlled flying device that can take excellent photographs and capture live scenes from the different vantage points. Travelers love drones for the unique perspectives it brings to photos and videos. The drones are not only used by travel enthusiasts and photographers but also by aviation lovers and hobby pilots. The basic toy drones which come with or without a camera are a great fun-filled gadget for kids.

Types of drones

There are several different types of drones that serve different purposes. Here is a basic guide to each type:

Toy Drones

Toy drones are made for the children or the beginners who do not want to invest much at the beginning. In fact, many people prefer practicing flying with a basic toy drone before handling a more sophisticated version. The toy drones have the same functionality but are cheaper and easy to use/learn. They also have significantly less flight time than professional models; most offer less than 10 minutes of flight time. Some of the toy drones also come with a basic camera however the picture quality is nothing to write home about. You can easily find a great beginner toy drone in the range from $40 to $100 bucks.

Racing Drones

These are usually preferred by the hobbyists who love to fly drones. Drone racing is a thrilling game that requires the drone to be speedy and agile. That is why the racing drones have greater speed and faster response to the signals. They come at a competitive price and have a sturdy body. The large batteries offer greater playing time.

Camera Drones

The camera drones have tech gear that is specifically designed for photographers and videographers. These drones are capable of capturing high-quality images and filming high-resolution videos from different perspectives. They are strong, durable, and made to withstand harsh environmental conditions for outdoor activities. These models are expensive because they utilize premium visual optics and value-added features needed by most professionals.

The camera drones come with several useful features like the gimbals that are required to pan and tilt the camera in order to capture pictures from different positions. They have powerful batteries for greater flight time. They also come with a built-in GPS through which they can navigate on their own.

However, they also have several cons working against them. They are usually bulky and heavy and come at high price points. They often need to be registered with the FAA before flying due to their weight. Pilots also need to follow legal rules and regulations before flying these drones.

And that’s why we mostly consider camera drones under $300 in this article. The drones in this category are lightweight so they need no licenses. The camera quality while not excellent is great for hobby photographers and travel lovers.

Factors to consider before buying drones under $300

Here are the factors that you need to consider while buying drones under 300. Use these 3 basic factors to compare your choices and you will find it easier to settle upon a drone that is best suited for your needs.

Image Quality

Image quality matters a lot when you are going to use a drone for professional photography. Different types of optical performances serve different functions; therefore, it is important to determine what kind of videos or pictures you are going to capture. That will determine whether you need cinematic quality videos and images or can work with a basic camera.

Environmental Conditions

The choice of a drone is linked to the climate you are going to operate the drone in. Some drones are just made to handle rough weather better. If you plan to use the drone in windy or rainy conditions or in extreme temperatures, then you need a drone having greater resistance to adverse weather conditions. You also need higher flight time to operate the drone in such weather. It needs to fly firmly in blowing winds or stormy weather.

Flight Time

Flight time largely depends upon the battery time. It may be referred to as a time during which the drone is able to fly in the air. The greater the flight time, the more the price of the drone. The models with lower flight time are considerably cheaper than the models with the optimal flight time. You need to gauge what is a workable flight time for your needs before investing in a drone. We usually like a happy medium of a minimum 30 minutes to be satisfied with a drone.

10 Tips for surviving Disney World in the summer

Are you looking for ways to stay cool at Disney in the summer? Find our best tips including what products to pack, what to wear, and more to escape the heat at Disney. This list will also help you if you are visiting in fall or spring or even winter because Walt Disney World is hot all year long!

Pack a personal fan for everyone in your group

While you can’t always stay indoors at Disney, you can and should carry a small personal fan for everyone in your party, especially for the kids. Most of the small personal fans are USB powered, can be easily recharged wherever you find a charging point, and some can also be charged with a power bank! They are powerful enough to whip up a small wind around the kids and keep them cool and happy. The fans come in different types from clip-on stroller fans for babies and toddlers to handheld USB fans for adults.

Another option is to get a misting fan to keep babies and kids cool in the humidity. My preschooler loves his misting fan and keeps spraying himself with water. If you are confused about whether to get the personal fans or misting fans, I would suggest a combination of both to use and switch as per your needs. While most of these fans are available inside the Disney stores they are extremely expensive and we recommend buying them for cheap before you go.

Dress for the heat!

One of the best ways to stay cool is to dress appropriately for the weather. If the forecast is for an extremely hot and humid day, then avoid blacks and synthetic materials. White or other light colors are great at reflecting heat while cotton and other natural fibers let your skin breathe – thus acting as a natural cooling system. I’m always divided between wearing long cotton/linen pants vs opting for shorts in summer: both have their advantages so I would suggest dressing as per your preference. However, long blue denim is an absolute no unless you are ready to sweat it out. If you are planning to wear tanks or shorts then I would recommend packing layers for the cool evenings. Also pack in hats, bandannas, or scarves to cover your head.

Wrap a cooling towel around your neck

I first came across cooling towels when I was taking our son on his first trip to India in the summer heat. Since then I have been a huge fan. You need to simply soak the towel, wring out the water, and shake it to feel ice cold. When the towels are dry, they feel soft just like regular towels. My son doesn’t want to remove his while we are in Disney or while hiking. The towel that we bought comes in its own travel case which is a big plus. I simply wet the towel before we go to Disney and put them in my backpack until we need to use it. I have also often used it as a sunscreen to avoid getting sunburnt. Simply drape a cooling towel over your neck and use it to wipe as needed. Rewet it whenever you see a water fountain. That’s it!

Wear comfortable and airy shoes

Wearing comfortable shoes is an essential part of your Disney experience year-round. While summer tempts visitors into wearing flip flops, these are actually one of the worst footwear to wear at Disney. Flip flops aren’t meant for walking miles and miles, which you’ll surely be doing inside the Disney parks. I also hate wearing walking shoes or sports shoes in the summer because my feet get sweaty. If you prefer shoes, then opt for moisture-wicking socks or even better wear cute and comfortable walking sandals like these by Plaka. For kids, crocs are a good bet for airy and waterproof shoes.

Drink lots of water and stay hydrated

You will be walking a lot in Disney with the little fry – and when I say a lot – I mean 8 to 12 miles every day! You need to drink ice water and stay hydrated to keep cool. One of the best ways to stay hydrated is to keep sipping water every half an hour so that you never reach the thirsty stage. I buy the kids a Disney themed bottle so they are happy with the bright colors and love to sip on them. We usually refill our bottles whenever we spot a water fountain and never let them get empty.

As soon as you see a shady spot, rest for a minute and recoup

If you are staying at Disney Resorts, then definitely head back in and cool at the pool or take a nap in your room. But if you are like us and want to do Disney on the cheap then you have probably purchased a one day ticket and are staying outside the park in a budget inn! In that case, we recommend taking a few minutes to rest and recoup as soon as you see a shady spot. Drink some cool water, wipe the kid’s faces, and then trudge on ahead. The best heat defense is not letting the kids get overheated and cranky in the first place!

Alternate outdoor rides and activities with indoor attractions

Disney has lots of indoor attractions and shows which you can use to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day. Our personal favorite is the Enchanted Tiki Room at both Disneyland Anaheim and WDW Florida. My kids love to see the Polynesian themed show and watch the birds, flowers, and plants come to life and sing the Tiki Room song while they sit in an air-conditioned environment. The shows at Disney theme parks are also a great way to spend some time indoors.

If you are traveling to Disney by yourself, then you will love this solo guide to WDW.

Let the kids splash and cool down at water play areas

Most of the Disney theme parks have some kind of water play area where little ones can have a blast and get soaked. We recommend bringing swimsuits or spare clothes if you plan to do this. Even if the park doesn’t have a water play area or splash pad, it may have rides where you will get wet. We love the Splash Mountain at both WDW and Disneyland to cool off during the afternoon. Just sit in the front and your party will be soaked through and through! There are also many splash play areas located in WDW Orlando which can be used to get away from the Florida heat. The Magic Kingdom has the Casey Jr. Splash and Soak Station while Epcot has its own splash pad which is a hit with the kids.

Eat lots of Mickey ice cream bars and Dole whips

Take advantage of all those treats Disney offers to stay cool. You will find great frozen treats, shakes, and drinks at almost every corner of Disney theme parks. Our favorites are Disney Mickey Mouse ice cream bars and the Dole soft serve pineapple whip. Other great treats include the Mint Julep in New Orleans Square and Clarabelle ice cream at Toontown in Disneyland. You can also find these in WDW along with ice cream sandwiches, cookie sundaes, gelatos, and macaron sandwiches.

Take the time to have a nice sit-down character dining experience

If you are going to hit the attractions non-stop at a hectic pace, then you are going to get sweaty and feel overheated irrespective of the weather. A great alternative is to use the morning to ride outdoors attractions then have a nice meal indoors in the blazing hot afternoon sun before venturing out again around 2 or 3 pm. Character meals are a great way to ensure that kids enjoy mealtimes plus adults get to eat good food. We resisted character meals initially because of their cost but then came around when we saw how much the kids enjoyed them. The kids will stay engrossed in seeing the fully dressed characters walking around and taking photos while you can sit back and enjoy a drink. Most of the character dining experiences need advance reservations and can get sold out so we recommend booking them as soon as you plan your trip.

6 tips for enjoying long flights with children

So you’re off on an epic adventure with the kids and you’re guaranteed to make some amazing memories. However, before that is the dreaded long haul flight that most parents have been worrying about for weeks.

Each age group comes with their own risks and challenges and the last thing you (and the other passengers) want is to be stuck on a nine-hour flight with a child who won’t stop crying.

However, what if I said that you could actually enjoy a long haul flight with children? There are certain tips and tricks you can try out that will make the whole process run a lot smoother. Here are just six tips that will revolutionize your future long-haul flights with children:

Traveling with kids? We have you covered!

1. Pack some in-flight entertainment

The novelty of being up in the air will only entertain your children for the first 20 minutes; after that, some toys and games will be essential in keeping them occupied. The key to keeping your kids entertained for hours on end is variety; many parents make the mistake of only bringing one or two toys and bringing them all out at once. Stagger the process and hand out different toys every hour.

Playdough and coloring books are just some good activity ideas. However, you should try and avoid bringing toys that are too messy or any that have any small parts that can get lost. When the tears start flowing, it’s useful to have your child’s favorite soft toy on hand.

Pack a lot of toys!

2. Preparation is key

If you fail to plan it’s likely that your long haul flight with the kids is going to be a disaster. However, with some forward-thinking and some savvy travel hacks up your sleeve, you’ll be able to enjoy the journey. Nothing’s worse than clawing through your carry on luggage, desperately searching for an item; before you know it, the contents of the bag are on your lap only for you to realize you left those baby wipes at home.

Pack your carry on well in advance and make sure to put all of the essentials near the top; it also helps to pack a spare pair of clothes for each child, as accidents can happen at any time. Another great tip is to plan your nappy changes strategically, to avoid both the last-minute toilet rush before the fasten seatbelt sign comes back on.

Pack everything that you think you need!

3. Make friends with the other passengers

The last thing you want is angry and frustrated passengers when your kid starts to get noisy. Instead, get everyone on the plane on your side, and be friendly to them so that they’re more understanding of your situation when your children get restless. If you have a young baby, a thoughtful gesture is to make a few bundles for the people around you filled with earbuds and a small note apologizing if your baby starts to cry.

4. Snacks are essential

The best part of any journey is the snacks, and you’ll get to enjoy 15 luxurious minutes of solitude as your children feast away. It’s likely that the in-flight food isn’t going to be good enough, so you’ll have to prepare a snack pack at home. Ideally, their lunchbox will be filled with nutritious fruit and nuts, crisps and sweets should always be kept as a backup.

Flying to Disney makes for a great family vacation!

5. Choose your seats carefully

Believe it or not, where you decide to sit on the plane will have a significant impact on the success of the journey ahead of you. If you’re given the choice, choose seats that are nearer the back of the plane; these are the least likely to get filled, so you might be able to look forward to a whole row where you can rest your feet and let your toddler crawl over.

6. Have your milk delivered to the airport

This tip is a lifesaver for parents who are still bottle feeding. The liquid restrictions in airports have always been a source of worry for new parents about to embark on a long haul flight; but did you know that you could get formula delivered to the airport? It’s one less worry on your mind as you stroll through customs and pick up the milk on the other side.

8 Tips for bottle feeding on the go

I have heard so many people complain about how difficult it is to travel with babies and infants. The complaints seem to mostly increase when the baby is formula fed. However, we have traveled with our son quite a few times before he even started solids and was mostly bottle fed and have never found it to be that tedious. The key to traveling with formula fed baby is to remember to pack everything you need and have a plan for routine tasks like cleaning bottles, warming formula etc. This is definitely easier when you are going on a road trip, instead of on a flight since there is plenty of space. But we have successfully managed it during air travel too and have had quite relaxing vacations. Here are a few things to pack while traveling with your formula fed baby.

Formula

Duh! We recommend carrying at least twice the formula you expect to go through, because of growth spurts. You never know when your baby is going to hit one and want to feed more often. We especially recommend it if you use a special formula that isn’t easily available.

Baby Bottles

We love the Philips Avent Natural ones. I carry at least 6-8 bottles on a trip which is enough to last me through the day. In addition, I keep washing them wherever possible in between.

Dish Soap And Bottle Brush

I keep some dish soap handy in a travel sized bottle and wash the bottles whenever I can get access to a clean bathroom and water. I carry Ziploc bags for the brush and soap so that it doesn’t get everything sticky or wet.

Steam Sterilizer Bags

These bags are a big favorite of mine and I can’t imagine traveling without them. These are simple Ziploc type of bags that are microwave safe and can be used to sterilize baby bottles, parts, pacifiers, teethers, spoons, sippy cups – pretty much everything that your baby will need. You just fill them with water and pop them in the microwave to sanitize everything!

Bottle Warmer

If you are traveling in winter then having a portable bottle warmer is a must. The portable ones are lightweight, often battery operated, and easily warm a 4 oz or 5 oz bottle in less than a minute.

Formula Dispenser

While not a must, I love carrying a formula dispenser – especially for road trips. That way I don’t need to buy the pricy formula single-use packs. I can buy a large value pack, keep it in the car and keep refilling the dispenser as needed.

Bottled Water

We always start our road trips by purchasing a huge pack of bottled water (36 or 48 bottles) for everyone to drink. That ensures we keep ourselves hydrated since we have the bottles handy plus makes certain that we are drinking clean potable water. This is especially important when traveling with a baby since the baby has a weak immune system and needs to be kept away from germs or other water-borne diseases.

Portable Bottle Drying Rack

This is also optional depending on the space you have. I have tried to carry the bottle drying rack whenever possible but if there’s no space I simply let the bottles air dry for a minute or two before sanitizing them.

That’s it. If you buy portable versions of the above items, they easily fit into a standard sized diaper bag and are quite lightweight to carry! Happy traveling with the baby.
